The bus pulled out of Pune at 8:00 PM on the 4th of September, thirty-two of us packed in with backpacks, pillows, and the particular restlessness that comes before a trip you’ve been looking forward to for weeks. Over the next two days we walked into a limestone cave hidden inside basalt hills, watched the sun drop into the Arabian Sea at Gokarna, stood under a 123-foot Shiva at Murudeshwar, crossed a mangrove boardwalk in Honnavar, and stared down four waterfalls falling in unison at Jog. This is that trip — where we went, when, and what I’d change if I did it again.

I have visited several times, and each visit is a new immersion into Japanese culture. Furubira is a small town in western Hokkaido, Japan. The simplicity of the people, humble landscapes, cleanliness, and purity of the atmosphere are truly satisfying.

Engaru Archaeological Centre: Tracing Hokkaido's Ancient Cultures

“A land with the ruins speaks the history.”

Ruins are traces of life, telling us about the people and their ways in the past. These remnants help us understand how ancient people lived. Hokkaido, which only became part of Japan in 1868, was long home to the Ainu and other unique cultures. While rice cultivation began on the Japanese mainland at the end of the Jomon period (14,000 BC – 300 BC), Hokkaido’s people relied on the island’s rich natural environment and influences from surrounding regions, developing their own distinctive cultures: Zoku-Jomon (Post-Jomon), Satsumon, Okhotsk, and Ainu.

Life in Sapporo

I’ve been living in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, for many years now. Hokkaido is known for its pristine forests, breathtaking natural beauty, dairy products, and fresh seafood. What I love the most are the mountains surrounding Sapporo—and the sea is just 15 km away. What more could one ask for? The combination of mountains and sea makes Sapporo a perfect place for hiking and camping.

Lake Toya and Volcanic Wonders of Hokkaido

Japan is located at the junction of several tectonic plates, making it rich in volcanic mountains and calderas. With over 100 volcanic mountains—more than almost any other country—Japan is famous for its onsen (hot springs) and dramatic volcanic landscapes. While most people know that mountains form due to volcanic activity, fewer realize that lakes can also be born from volcanoes. These are called caldera lakes. One such gem in Hokkaido is Lake Toya (Toya-ko).
